As a Tech-based member of the field, I have traditionally leaned towards technology-descriptive terms. I have always seen RegenMed as the umbrella term, with cell-based, molecule-based (includes genes), and biomaterial-based therapies having a Venn-like overlapping relationship. Eg. Tengion’s engineered bladder is both cell-based and biomaterial-based, but many tissue engineering approaches are non cell-based.

The most important take-home is that the next generation therapeutics are heavily dependent on the convergence of many technologies – much like the iPhone. However, the business side of me thinks that therapies shouldn’t be classified by technology, as the base technology of a therapeutic needs to be invisible to the end-user (surgeon and patient), and focusing too much on classification outside of the RegenMed umbrella will only confuse the field. Sometimes the business Jon wins the argument, and sometimes the technology Jon wins…. but both Jons are more worried about the regulatory and IP aspects of these next generation therapies than nomenclature.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
